Before we race into the new year, let’s take a moment and celebrate some of the progress that we witnessed in 2025, both in the hotel business and in the world beyond.

1.      New clinical trials utilizing CRISPR and related gene-editing technologies, such as David Liu's work (a 2025 Breakthrough Prize winner), are showing significant promise in treating previously incurable genetic diseases.

2.      A cease fire between Israel and Hamas, two years after war began in the Gaza Strip, has dramatically reduced the death toll, allowed for hostages to return to Israel in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners, and increased the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza.

3.      Sophisticated AI models, such as the Conditional Randomized Transformer (CRT), are significantly enhancing the speed and diversity of new molecule generation for pharmaceuticals, making drug development faster and more efficient.

4.      AI became more valuable for hoteliers. Dynamic pricing algorithms enhanced by AI allowed more hotels to optimize rates with greater precision. AI also enabled hyper-personalized guest experiences, tailoring everything from room settings and dining suggestions to marketing offers.

5.      SpaceX’s10th Starship test flight in August 2025 achieved major objectives, with the upper stage completing its mission before the Super Heavy booster's water landing. This significant step paves the way for Starship to become capable of Moon and Mars missions.

6.      After2024 turned out to be the third-costliest hurricane season ever, no hurricanes made landfall in the U.S. this season for the first time since 2015.

7.      Research on drug combinations (including Rapamycin and Trametinib) shows promising results in preclinical models, potentially extending healthy lifespan and advancing our understanding of the aging process.

8.      To reduce expenses, conserve resources, and help the planet, more hotels implemented eco-friendly practices such as eliminating single-use plastics, adopting smart thermostats, and integrating renewable energy.

9.      A new study by investigators from Mass General Brigham and Harvard shows that a non-drug, wearable device can help people with substance-use disorders manage stress, reduce cravings, and lower their risk of relapse in real time.

10.  Driven by growing consumer demand for "clean label" products and increasing regulatory pressure in the US, food coloring is transitioning from synthetic dyes towards safer, more sustainable plant- and bio-based food coloring alternatives.

11.  The completion of the world's largest and most powerful pulsed superconducting electromagnet system at ITER marks a major step toward achieving sustained, self-sufficient, and clean nuclear fusion power.

12.  An AI-trained robot armed with tools to cut, clip and grab soft tissue successfully removed pig organs without human help in eight operations. Scientists called this a milestone toward clinical deployment of autonomous surgical systems that would reduce waiting lists for critical surgeries.

13.  U.S. hotels’ overall Average Daily Rate (ADR) is expected to continue its growth in 2025, maintaining its steady climb since 2020’s COVID-induced low point, thanks to pricing in the luxury and upper-upscale segments. (CoStar/Tourism Economics)

14.  The U.S. FDA has granted De Novo authorization to Clairity Breast, the first-ever AI-powered platform that predicts a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer over the next five years—using only a standard mammogram. It detects subtle imaging patterns in breast tissue that correlate with future cancer development, even if the mammogram appears normal to the human eye.

15.  Scientists at the University of Hawaii at Manoa have discovered that many species of marine fungi can degrade ocean plastics and protect marine ecosystems.
